February: Portraits and Figures in Watercolor

At Mud & Print Gallery Appleton, WI

Link: Call Linda at 920-277-1599 for info and to register.

Learn the basics of painting people, animals (pets) and portraits in  this 3-week course.

I'll demonstrate how to mix paints on  a palette, create washes and handle different brushes. I'll show you how to create skin tones and shadows, plus the texture of hair or fur. It's all in how much water you add...

To save time, I'll ask you to sketch, in light pencil, on watercolor paper, the person/animal you want to paint.  Bring that along with a photo-reference, preferably not on a phone. You may work from your photos, and/or the sketch you started before class. You may also play with free-form person or face-like shapes and colors as you get the feel of the watercolor medium.

Be as loose and expressive as you'd like. I'll work with you individually as much as possible to help with glitches!

My goal is for you to complete at least one finished painting.

Minimum 4 students, maximum 10.

I’ll offer this class again. The catalog will be out in April.

Create Landscapes, Water, Beaches and Skies in Watercolor and Pencil

Place: The Clearing Folk School, Ellison Bay, Wisconsin

Dates: October 6th to 12th, 2019

Treat yourself to a week of making drawings and paintings in pencil and watercolor. We’ll work with ideas you bring along, and with the natural beauty around us at The Clearing. You’ll have your own table space in the Schoolhouse studio on which to spread out your supplies and to work at your own pace. We’ll also spend some time sketching the dramatic landscape at The Clearing, especially during sunny weather.

And we’ll take relaxing breaks to enjoy time together and share the work we are doing.

Beginners are welcome, as well as those who want to enrich their work with new techniques. Each morning, I will demonstrate different techniques in capturing cloud patterns, sunlight-on-water, and other natural forms.  I will share what I have learned from 30 years of watercolor painting, particularly landscape, beaches, water and skies. He’ll also share his many tricks of rendering nature in pencil.

You are also welcome to explore your own subjects.

You may choose to work in graphite pencil, in watercolor, or combine the two! I will provide a complete list of paper, drawing tools and watercolor supplies to bring with you. You may also bring pastels, pastel pencils, color drawing pencils or ink drawing pens of your choosing to explore and play with.
