Events Calendar / External Links: Rusty's Beach -- Wherein I share musings and memories of a childhood at the beach (and other things). I also blog about my work and inspiration. New Island -- After many years of mulling it over and playing around, I've developed it -- and continue to develop it -- into a real imaginary place called New Island.

![]() The Pillars of Creation This "object" is part of the remaining dust cloud from an ancient supernova explosion. the debris is slowly condensing into new stars as it drifts away from the site of the old star. The "pillars" are some ten light years long! I feel I am barely doing justice to the immensity of these places. Watercolor, 2005, 10" w x 10-1/4" h $800.00 |
Orion Nebula Rising The Hubble Space Telescope has opened up a new frontier of imagery for me -- places are out there that we've never dreamed of! Here, I imagined looking out over an ocean on a far away planet not far from the Orion Nebula. What a night-time view! Watercolor, 2005, 10" w x 10-1/4" h $800.00 |

New! Beachwalker I recently started working with drybrush, which I used on the skin tones in “Beachwalker.” I did the background and some tinting of the figure in traditional watercolor, and then continued with drybrush technique on the skin and hair over the next several weeks. Drybrush is the use of tiny strokes of thin watercolor with a small brush that is nearly dry, leaving no wetness to speak of. Though the process is slow, the buildup of color and tone can be very subtle and rich. Watercolor and dry
brush, 2006, $1200.00 |
New! Catalina Afternoon Sunlight reflected on the ocean always appeals to me in a very soothing, soulful way. “Catalina Afternoon” is taken after the many afternoons I spent on the beach as a kid, with that shimmering light and Santa Catalina Island sometimes visible on the horizon. I used a photo that I took of the water and another photo my daughter Katie took of the island to put together this “memory” painting. Watercolor, 2006, 29" h x 40" w $3500.00

![]() New! An Afternoon of Contemplation In this painting, I've combined my fascination of a a woman (who is she?) on an imagined beach with an old house that looks comfortable and permanent, but a bit too close to the ocean. I often dwell on that "life on the edge" idea, where security and permanence are not guaranteed, but everything is fine at the moment. This painting also invites you to speculate or contemplate about what might be going on here -- what is the story? Watercolor, 2006, 20" h x 26" w $1500.00 |
