OCEANS AND DREAMS New Work, Custom Projects & Commissions
Events Calendar / External Links: Rusty's Beach -- Wherein I share musings and memories of a childhood at the beach (and other things). I also blog about my work and inspiration. New Island -- After many years of mulling it over and playing around, I've developed it -- and continue to develop it -- into a real imaginary place called New Island.

Painted Folding Screens A California client wanted scenes painted on two room-divider folding screens. We worked together over several months to design each screen and create the images that she desired. The canvas panels were custom-stretched to allow paintings on both sides, then a maple frame was custom-built to accommodate the canvases. Santa Barbara Beach (side one) 2004 -- Acrylic on canvas, maple-framed folding screen, 60" w x 66" h |
![]() Nebula Screen (side one) The client suggested Hubble Space Telescope photos, which inspired me to do several smaller paintings in addition to this acrylic of an area of the Small Megallanic Cloud. This view is said to be 100 light years across! 2006 -- Acrylic on canvas, maple-framed folding screen, 60" w x 66" h

Events and Causes I enjoy the challenge of creating "new views" of places to visually describe an event or make a strong visual point. |
||||
| The low-lying coast of Southern California has been reduced to the few backwater wetlands that have been overlooked by developers. The rest has been paved over with residential, industrial and commercial development, all tied together with freeways. Several local groups are fighting to save what remains of the wetlands and I've done some paintings for the cause. | ||||

A New Day Watercolor, 2000, 26" x 40" The Ballona Wetlands is located between the communities of Playa del Rey and Marina del Ray in Los Angeles County. The land, once owned by Howard Hughes, is threatened by development. I was asked to create a painting for their fundraising effort. For more information, visit The Ballona Wetlands Land Trust. |

Our Natural Coast -- Then and Now Watercolor, 2001, 26" x 40" Orange County, California, where I grew up, probably once looked like the scene above. I worked from maps and old aerial photos to reconstruct this view. Now, the area is completely urbanized. Military port facilities, private marinas, and endless suburbs cover this entire view except a small area of the wetlands in the center of this painting. The Friends of the Seal Beach Wildlife Refuge asked me to do the painting to benefit their fundraising efforts. |

![]() 2006 Green Bay Marathon How do you draw a marathon race? I worked closely with the promoters, using their photos of runners from previous races, and many area pictures of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The race follows the Fox River and then passes through Lambeau Field (home of the Green Bay Packers) to the finish line at the War Memorial -- all these things were incorporated in an imaginary overview. I‘ve just been commissioned to paint the 2007 event poster as well! Watercolor, 2006, 22" w x 30" h, for event poster. |
Old Church at Delafield The Friends of the Oconomowoc Community Hospital in Oconomowoc, WI, commission an annual painting of a local historical landmark. I was asked to paint this church using old newspaper photos taken at different times. My challenge was to re-create the church at the time it was built. Watercolor, 2007, 20" w x 26" h, for The Friends of the Oconomowoc Community Hospital.

Paintings & Drawings of "Home" and Other Places I've done many watercolor paintings of private homes, businesses and historical places. I enjoy the challenge of recreating places in other times or other seasons. |
||||
![]() Don's TV Sales & Service The client wanted a small memory drawing of his boyhood home, which adjoined his dad's TV repair business, as it was in the 1970s. Pencil drawing, 9" x 14" |
![]() The Old Banta House This Georgian-style house was painted using photos that I took in mid-winter when the trees were bare and there was snow on the ground. The client, however, preferred a summer view when the yard was green! Watercolor, 21" x 29" |
![]() Our Parents' House The kids (now adults) who grew up in this house in the 1960s commissioned this painting as a gift for their parents who no longer lived there. They provided me with a slide taken just after a refreshing summer thundershower in 1967. Watercolor, 16" x 20" |
