Rusty's Beach -- Wherein I share musings and memories of a childhood at the beach (and other things).  I also blog about my work and inspiration.

New Island -- After many years of mulling it over and playing around, I've developed it -- and continue to develop it -- into a real imaginary place called New Island.

Biography

I've been fascinated by beaches, waves, and the energy of the ocean as far back as I can remember.  Growing up on the California coast, I spent most of my childhood on the beach and began drawing beaches and waves (and imagined tsunami and other disasters) while still in grade school.

I studied art beginning in 1966 at Cal State University at Long Beach, then at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. In 1980 I received my Bachelor's Degree in Art from Western Oregon University.

In 1987, my wife Vicki and I moved to Wisconsin from Oregon to raise our three daughters and be nearer to family.  It was the sudden irony of being away from the ocean that compelled me to spend a lot more time painting it.  I have found that I can "be there" while painting beaches and surf from pictures I bring back from California and Oregon. I’ve also been painting a long series of imaginary places which have evolved into an island-nation called New Island. Take a look at it at www.newisland.net.

Since 1990, I’ve been creating and exhibiting my work full-time, beginning with art festivals and expanding into gallery shows and commissioned work.  I work with watercolor, acrylic, and graphite on paper and with acrylic and oil on canvas.  I usually work out the composition in a sketch book first, then draw it out full-size on the sheet or canvas before painting.  I enjoy working in various mediums and sizes, from intimate 8- x 10-inch pencil drawings to 8-foot-long paintings.

In the last five years or so, I’ve been concentrating on larger paintings of ocean waves and storm surf. These are becoming my core statement as an artist.
