Rusty's Beach -- Wherein I share musings and memories of a childhood at the beach (and other things).  I also blog about my work and inspiration.

New Island -- After many years of mulling it over and playing around, I've developed it -- and continue to develop it -- into a real imaginary place called New Island.

About Lee Mothes...

Big Wave No. 1 -- Near Moro Bay

My paintings celebrate what I love about the ocean and water -- the light and color, the peace of mind, and the adventure.  I work from memories of my childhood spent wandering beaches, saltwater marshes and tide pools of Southern California.  I have always been delighted and fascinated by patterns of sunlight on the water, how waves shape the sand, and how winter storms drive the heavy surf up and over the beaches.

Interior and old-house paintings reflect my love of indigenous and eclectic architecture.  I strive to capture soul-nourishing places where people live, but which are also natural and comfortable:  an old chair on a small brick patio surrounded by the sea and the sky; the view of undisturbed fields and distant water from a well-lived-in old porch.  My paintings reflect my belief and conviction that people and nature can co-exist beneficially.

I have always loved to draw and, in recent years, have found watercolor to be the best medium with which to capture the richest balance of contrast, color and brilliance.  I still enjoys pencil drawing from time to time, and have also been dabbling in acrylics.

A California native, I studied art at California State University at Long Beach and California College of Arts and Crafts; architecture at California Polytechnic College at San Luis Obispo; and earned my art degree at Western Oregon University.  I currently live and paint in northeast Wisconsin.

Since I was talking more to telemarketers than customers, I've given up the phone line -- business over the last year has been done almost entirely online or via email.  If you'd like to talk about a project or an order, please drop me a line.
